1 John - session 1
Light and Love
The book of I John should be entitled light and love! We read in this letter of the truth of the fullness of God;
God is light . . . in Him there is no darkness at all . . . If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in darkness, we lie . . . we do not live by the truth . . . If we confess our sins, He is faithful and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:5-10)

We have one who speaks to the Father in our defense, Jesus Christ. He is the righteous one. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins and not ours only, but for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:1-2). Perhaps you never knew where those refreshing words were found and placed in most liturgy.
Read how John contrasts an unbeliever with a Believer. This gives us a word picture of someone "complete in Christ". John gave fair warning:
Read how John contrasts an unbeliever with a Believer. This gives us a word picture of someone "complete in Christ". John gave fair warning:
He who says he is in the light, but hates his brother, is in darkness even now (1 John 2:9)
Do not cherish the world, the world passes away, but he who does the will of God abides forever. (1 John 2:15-17)
These are the types of sins for which we ask forgiveness. John mentioned the one unforgivable sin, which is thought to be the "quenching of the Holy Spirit". After all, if the Spirit is denied, man cannot communicate with the Spirit of God. I imagine it is as basic as that.
Lately I have been reminded of what John wrote in his Gospel, found in chapter three, verse nineteen; "Men preferred the darkness because of their evil deeds . . . lest they be condemned . . . but he who has the truth comes into the light."
Recently, even some Believers have become fearful on their death beds, afraid they would not be forgiven. Is this because some Television Evangelists try to scare the hell out of us? Yet, they know this verse, "God sent His Son that the whole world, through Him, might be saved." (John 3:17) There is no reason to hide in the darkness of "the valley of the shadow of death" (Psalm 23).
Go for the light! Christ will be calling you "out of the darkness into His marvelous LIGHT" (I Peter 2:9).
God bless!
