Philemon - session 1

Philemon was the owner of a slave by the name of Onesimus. This slave was a "runaway" when Paul met him. They were in prison together. Paul relayed the Good News in his encouraging way and then Onesimus converted to Christianity. This brought about a serious decision for the slave. As a new creature in Christ, he began to feel that he should return to his master. Paul wrote and impassioned plea to Philemon, as you can read between the lines in this letter. Paul knew Philemon personally.
Not only did Paul encourage the slave owner to take Onesimus back, but to greet him and honor him as he would Paul himself, treating him as a "dear brother". Paul offered to pay for any debt incurred by Onesimus and gave assurance that he would come to visit. Paul was willing to go the extra mile, even more like ten miles. This must have been quite a witness for all who knew them.
God bless!
